Program Overview:

In this program, you will be trained to facilitate conversations in the galleries and lead tours of both the permanent collection and special exhibitions at the USC Pacific Asia Museum (off-campus in Pasadena)  and The USC Fisher Museum of Art (on campus). You will learn to engage visitors of all ages and backgrounds with the museums’ diverse works of art by leading dialogues and making personal connections.

As part of this paid position, you will get hands-on training in the latest museum education strategies, gain public speaking experience, and interact with various museum departments. You will be supported through mentorship and ongoing training sessions throughout the year, focused on further developing your gallery teaching skills. USC PAM’s off-campus, Pasadena location, will provide you with a unique opportunity to engage with the greater communities of Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley. Your work at USC Fisher will allow you to engage with youth from the local USC area in a unique experience for high school students.

Logistics and Commitment:

Once selected, you will participate in a paid, week-long training session designed to get you familiar with the USC Pacific Asia Museum’s collection and museum teaching techniques. As part of the training, you will be responsible for some at-home reading and writing assignments. After completion of training, you must be available to facilitate the galleries and lead spotlight tours on at least two weekend days per month. There will be occasional opportunities for working special evening events. In addition, you will have paid time each month for preparation and office hours at the museum.

In the Spring semester, you will be giving tours to high school students at the USC Fisher Museum on select weekday mornings and/or afternoons. You will be trained to do these tours throughout the Fall semester. The commitment is to work at both museums over the course of the academic year, from August through May. Some training sessions and meetings  will be virtual.
