Position Description

The Education and Curatorial Intern will focus on two primary projects that are connected by the same goal: to make the museum collection more accessible and representative of the communities it aims to serve. Working closely with the museum educator and curator, the intern will use ten objects from the museum collection to (1) write a script for an audio guide geared toward visually impaired visitors and (2) create community perspective labels to accompany curatorial perspective labels that are already in use. For the first part of the project, the intern will research models of interpretive audio guides geared towards people with visual impairments. These guides focus on object description so that visitors can imagine what it looks like before learning its historical and cultural significance. For the community perspective labels, the intern will do outreach to find community members who have connections to the objects, conduct interviews, and write the text in a clear and accessible way. The objects for both projects will be carefully selected by both departments. The intern will spend 50% of the time on each project, working closely with the department heads as their guide.
