USC Undergraduate Student Educator Program 

Program Overview

In this program, you will be trained to facilitate conversations in the galleries and lead tours of both the permanent collection and special exhibitions. You will learn to engage visitors of all ages and backgrounds with the museum’s diverse works of art. As a Student Educator, you will be a vital ambassadors of the museum’s mission of furthering intercultural understanding through the arts of Asia and the Pacific Islands.

As part of this paid position, you will get hands-on training in the latest museum education strategies, gain public speaking experience, and interact with various museum departments. You will be supported through mentorship and ongoing training sessions throughout the year, focused on further developing your gallery teaching skills. The museum’s off-campus, Pasadena location, will provide you with a unique opportunity to engage with the greater communities of Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley.

Logistics and Commitment

Once selected, you will participate in a paid, week-long training session designed to get you familiar with the museum’s collection and museum teaching techniques. As part of the training, you will be responsible for some at-home reading and writing assignments.

After completion of training, you must be available to facilitate the galleries and lead tours on at least two weekend days per month. There will also be occasional opportunities for working special evening events. In addition, you will have paid time each month for preparation and office hours at the museum.

Training dates: August 17 – 21, 2020 | 9:30am – 4pm

This program is open to all USC undergraduate students who are Work-Study eligible. We are looking for students in all majors/departments with a strong interest in learning about or knowledge of Asian arts and cultures. No previous art related experience is required.
