In celebration of the museum’s 50th anniversary, USC PAM and the creative collective Narrated Objects invited participants to an interactive, all-ages workshop on ceremonial dress!

During this one-hour online workshop, L.A. fashion designer Carol Young of Undesigned offered tips and demonstrated techniques for how to elevate an outfit so that it would be perfect for a party, as well as shared designs she had made for special occasions. Additionally, museum educator Valentina Quezada highlighted a few special-occasion textiles from the museum’s permanent collection.

Authors Teena Apeles and Andrea Richards of Narrated Objects hosted the festive Zoom gathering and encouraged guests to share their stories of special dress.

Participants were encouraged to wear their favorite party clothes. To enhance the festive mood, all guests received a cocktail/mocktail recipe from Bear & Stone so they could sip on something special too.

Suggested materials for the workshop included:

• 2 to 3 pieces of clothing that participants hadn’t worn in a while
• A few favorite/meaningful accessories to play with (shoes, jewelry, scarf)

This workshop was FREE and open to participants of all ages!

A former architecture student and native Angeleno, Carol Young became intrigued with the needs of urban nomads while living abroad in Asia, studying design in NYC, and traveling far and wide. Taking subways, walking, and cycling around town, she found herself seeking clothing that would allow her to move, keep dry and comfortable, but also express her individuality. In 2003, she returned to Los Angeles and started her clothing line, Carol Young | Undesigned, and in 2006 opened her current Los Feliz studio + boutique. Carol lived in Echo Park with her architect husband Peter Kim, their two teenage sons, and pup Darwin (the shop mascot).

Carol Young | Undesigned was a series of beautiful, seasonless clothing designed for the modern woman. Using a combination of durable performance fabrics, sustainable organic & recycled blends, and designer surplus fabrics for flavor, her goal was to create well-loved pieces that would live a long and cherished lifetime in one’s wardrobe. Each piece explored creating texture and shape in clean, modern, and flattering silhouettes.

Handcrafted, distinct, and individually made with TLC for all, Carol Young | Undesigned was worn by distinguished curators, architects, designers, filmmakers, and creative individuals worldwide.
