Conversation@PAM: Artist Gallery Talk with Antonius-Tín Bui and Jennifer Ling Datchuk

Exhibited artists Antonius-Tín Bui and Jennifer Ling Datchuk from Intervention: Fresh Perspectives after 50 Years discussed their work in an informal and intimate gallery conversation via Zoom webinar.

Event Details: Participants were invited to register in advance for the webinar using the Zoom link. After registering, they received a confirmation email with information about joining the webinar.

More about the Artists:

Jennifer Ling Datchuk was an artist born in Warren, Ohio, and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Her work explored her layered identity as a woman, a Chinese woman, an “American,” and a third-culture kid. Trained in ceramics, Datchuk worked with porcelain and materials often associated with traditional women’s work, such as textiles and hair, to discuss fragility, beauty, femininity, intersectionality, identity, and personal history.

Antonius-Tín Bui (they/them/theirs pronouns) was a spontaneous shapeshifter and poly-disciplinary artist with roots across the country. They worked in hand-cut paper, community engagement, performance, and soft sculpture to visualize hybrid identities and histories that confronted the unsettling present. Their identity as a queer, genderfluid, Vietnamese-American informed how they used beauty as a refuge for marginalized communities.

As USC PAM celebrated its 50th anniversary, the museum reflected on its past and future by examining the collection and its meaning through the diverse perspectives of contemporary Asian diasporic artists. Intervention: Fresh Perspectives after 50 Years offered new ways to view the USC PAM permanent collection through the works of seven contemporary artists: Antonius Bui, Audrey Chan, Jennifer Ling Datchuk, Amir Fallah, Akiko Jackson, Alan Nakagawa, and kate-hers RHEE. These artists created original works in response to PAM’s collection, reminding visitors of the complexity of the museum’s history and highlighting the many ways the public can engage with the story beyond traditional displays in galleries, websites, and printed materials.
